Here you are a “deductive-image”. It depicts the Appalachian mountain range by using only individual road segments. Expressive result taken from “All Streets“, an interesting project by Ben Fry.
“All of the streets in the lower 48 United States: an image of 26 million individual road segments. No other features (such as outlines or geographic features) have been added to this image, however they emerge as roads avoid mountains, and sparse areas convey low population.”
[...] It’s always been said that Americans love the open road. Ben Fry has illustrated just how much with his map entitled “All Streets” of the Lower 48 states solely through the symbolization of roads. With 26 million roads segments, the outlines of lakes and features of mountains becomes apparent as the roads are aligned to avoid them. The map takes on a secondary meaning with sparsely populated areas laid bare by the paucity of roadwork and the more populated areas of the United States cluttered with pavement. The project uses US Census TIGER data and Fry blogs about how he created the map. (Via Art & Cartography) [...]
