Experimental workshop „Art & Cartography“
Exploring visible and invisible borders in Paris – a dialogic walk with cartographers and artists
Monday, july 4th, 5pm – 10pm
Meeting point: Palais de Congrès, Porte Maillot (exact meeting point will be announced soon)
During an experimental journey through the nearby neighbourhoods of Paris, cartographers from various countries and Paris based artists (for example: dancers, actors, textile designers, architects, painters etc.) will solve together a creative task and hence enjoy a hopefully intense exchange of ideas along the way. Both fields – the arts and cartography – will contribute to a sharpining of different reception modes while walking and driving through Paris’ urban space.
Mixed groups of cartographers and artists will be send out to places and areas where invisible and visible borders, limits, ruptures of the Paris topography can be witnessed (inspired by Eric Hazan’s wonderful book “The Invention of Paris. A History told in footsteps”, 2002).
For that purpose three different parcours will be prepared and a folder with quotations, hints and maps along with some tools and devices for the documentation process will be provided.
Around 8pm the groups are supposed to gather in LA RUCHE (a co-working space at 84, Quai de Jemmapes: http://www.la-ruche.net). There, a series of largely plotted maps of the given areas is prepared, so that the sketches, notes, photos, objects can be arranged and labelled in the sense of a collage.
Some food and wine will be offered. A professional photographer accompanies the activities of this experimental workshop and will provide the participants with a selection of pictures afterwards. The participants of the workshop will get a list of contact details in case they wish to stay in touch with each other for further meetings.

The map displayed above is the Nouveau Plan de Paris divisé en 20 Arrondissements (1860, drawn by Charles Smith). Each arrondissement is carefully hand tinted in a different pastel colour. A subsequent owner drew in lines indicating the placement of the new, wider boulevards (planned by Baron Haussmann). The map reflects Haussmann’s power and determination as he remodelled Paris from a medieval city to a modern one (copy of University of Illinois, Chicago).
ART & CARTOGRAPHY 
The group investingating the area of “La Goutte d’Or” has crossed a visible and invisible border between a bourgeois urban space with children in the playground and tourists walking around and a cosmopolitan space with crouded streets full of faces, colours, smells, sounds (voices and music!!) and objects coming from all around the world. There, I have experienced the sense of a cosmopolitan city but at the same time I had the feeling of a community searching for the recognition of its cultural background (I saw my first urban ecomuseum!!!!).
I wish to thank my journey companions: Chris-Chris, Cristine, Cécile et Anika for this pleasant discovering. And last, but not least, sorry Anika for “deconstructing” your map…. Ciao a tutti, Federica Burini
Thanks to Barbara and Anika for organising a wonderful event, and a special thanks to Chris, Cristine, Federica, Cécile and Anika for walking with me. The workshop was a great chance to experience some incredibly diverse parts of Paris and meet, discuss and share approaches with people from a range of disciplines.
Je vais laisser mes impressions en français, car j’arriverais certainement mieux à exprimer correctement ce que j’ai ressentis et que je suis certaine que Sébastien assurera une traduction parfaite!.
Bien sûr, j’ai apprécié cette expérience. Il y avait un côté très bizarre pour moi qui ait vécu 7 ans à Paris pas très loin du quartier que nous avions à explorer (St-Denis,St-Martin.. et j’habitais sur le canal St Martin près de la rue du Faubourg St Martin!). Comme souvent, les lieux que nous avons fréquenté quasi-quotidiennement nous sont à la fois familiers, mais nous y attachons peu d’attention et levons rarement le nez, ou mettons rarement nos sens en action. Au contraire, et je m’en suis bien rendu compte après une semaine à Paris, la vie quotidienne à Paris oblige certainement à “fermer” ses sens pour ne pas se sentir sans arrêt sollicité et s’épuiser trop rapidement.
Sur les limites visibles et invisibles….
Les percées hausmaniennes ont bien joué leur rôle de rupture, le boulevard de Sebastropol, comme celui de Réaumur, ainsi que “les grands boulevards” ont marqué à chaque fois que nous les avons franchi des limites brutales. Dans notre pérégrination, nous avons davantage arpenté la rue St-Denis que la rue St-Martin. Je pense que même si clairement ces deux rues relèvent d’ambiance radicalement différentes comme le soulignait Hazan (sex shops versus “village”) , la rue Saint-Denis elle-même était traversée par de nombreuses limites invisibles. Ces limites étaient en 2D avec les changements d’ambiance d’une partie de la rue à l’autre, mais aussi en 3D, avec des rez-de chaussée d’immeubles occupées par des prostituées et des étages par des ateliers de confection (clandestins?).
Sur l’expérience elle-même, je voudrais dire deux choses :
– tout d’abord la difficulté de se laisser gagner par des sensations quand une promenade se fait de manière collective. Il y a forcément des interférences avec les autres. Or comme nous ne nous connaissions pas, naturellement, nous exprimions moins facilement nos “ressentis” vis à vis des autres. Les discussions entre nous sont, à mon avis restés assez banales ou alors ont dévié vers des sujets totalement déconnectés de l’expérience. Je pense que cet effet est assez inévitable et était peut-être souhaité. Mais le résultat pourrait être totalement différente si on faisait la même expérience avec des personnes qui se connaissent déjà…
– La restitution des impressions m’a paru être un moment très intéressant. Voir les cartographes complétement “coincés” pour retranscrire leur sensation ou restant dans des représentations très réalistes ou convenues par rapport à des artistes proposant des formes d’expression beaucoup plus libre, m’a permis de me rendre compte de notre degré de “formatage”. Il me parait évident que sans artiste présent, ce moment de restitution aurait été totalement différent et j’ai beaucoup apprécié leur présence.
Au final, je voudrais vous féliciter pour cette expérience très stimulante si bien organisée et si sympathique. En tant que géographe, elle me fait aussi réfléchir à la restitution des “sorties de terrain” sur les cartes… dans des productions cartographiques plus personnelles et originales. Ayant des projets sur l’appropriation de l’espace par les enfants, je pense que ce genre de “ballade” et de restitution peut être intéressante.
Voici pour les premières réactions “à tiède”. Encore toutes mes félicitations pour cette organisation parfaite et les supports de promenade si bien pensés…
