Mapping Ephemeralities / Ephemeral Cartographies – Workshop organized by the International Cartographic Association (ICA) Commissions on Maps and Society & Art and Cartography (Rio de Janeiro, August 21-22, 2015)
The goal of this workshop is to provide an intellectual and creative space to share different ideas and methodologies about mapping evanescent elements such as memories, stories, sensations and perceptions about places, as well as a practical environment to learn how some of these methodologies and technologies can be used and adapted for designing (online) maps of ephemeral phenomenon. This workshop combines academic and artistic presentations with ephemeral data collection activities. One objective of this workshop is to use these data to design an ephemeral online collectively-made map of the ephemeralities of the Maracana neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The workshop will take place at the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro) in the auditorium of the cultural department building.
The BALANCE-UNBALANCE conference will seek to develop an interdisciplinary approach in order to “deeper awareness and creating lasting intellectual working partnerships in solving our global environmental crisis” (ambitious program…).
Among the different activities proposed, there will be a session entitled Mapping environmental issues from above & from the ground. “Building on a previous workshop entitled “Mapping Environmental Issues: Arts and Cartography Cross-perspectives” (http://mappingworkshop.wordpress.com), this session aims to bring together scientists, artists, practitioners and students interested in mapping environmental issues from different perspectives, using different (and unconventional) approaches.”

The working group of Art & Cartography had a very creative and inspiring workshop at the International Cartographic Conference (ICC) in Paris. During this activity, 26 people from all over the world with different backgrounds and interests related to arts and maps came together to walk through five Parisian areas in order to map the visible and unvisible frontieres. This was a very stimulating event as illustrated by some the following pictures:

Experimental workshop „Art & Cartography“
Exploring visible and invisible borders in Paris – a dialogic walk with cartographers and artists
Monday, july 4th, 5pm – 10pm
Meeting point: Palais de Congrès, Porte Maillot (exact meeting point will be announced soon)
During an experimental journey through the nearby neighbourhoods of Paris, cartographers from various countries and Paris based artists (for example: dancers, actors, textile designers, architects, painters etc.) will solve together a creative task and hence enjoy a hopefully intense exchange of ideas along the way. Both fields – the arts and cartography – will contribute to a sharpining of different reception modes while walking and driving through Paris’ urban space.
Mixed groups of cartographers and artists will be send out to places and areas where invisible and visible borders, limits, ruptures of the Paris topography can be witnessed (inspired by Eric Hazan’s wonderful book “The Invention of Paris. A History told in footsteps”, 2002).
For that purpose three different parcours will be prepared and a folder with quotations, hints and maps along with some tools and devices for the documentation process will be provided.
Around 8pm the groups are supposed to gather in LA RUCHE (a co-working space at 84, Quai de Jemmapes: http://www.la-ruche.net). There, a series of largely plotted maps of the given areas is prepared, so that the sketches, notes, photos, objects can be arranged and labelled in the sense of a collage.
Some food and wine will be offered. A professional photographer accompanies the activities of this experimental workshop and will provide the participants with a selection of pictures afterwards. The participants of the workshop will get a list of contact details in case they wish to stay in touch with each other for further meetings.

The map displayed above is the Nouveau Plan de Paris divisé en 20 Arrondissements (1860, drawn by Charles Smith). Each arrondissement is carefully hand tinted in a different pastel colour. A subsequent owner drew in lines indicating the placement of the new, wider boulevards (planned by Baron Haussmann). The map reflects Haussmann’s power and determination as he remodelled Paris from a medieval city to a modern one (copy of University of Illinois, Chicago).
The conference “Experimental Geography: An Aesthetic Investigation of Space” will take place on Saturday, March 21st, 3pm at the New Museum, New York. Sounds really interesting! Can anybody make it?
Experimental Geography: An Aesthetic Investigation of Space
Creative Time curator Nato Thompson will lead a discussion of Experimental Geography with Lize Mogel and Damon Rich, two artists who participated in his exhibition (for Independent Curators International) and book (Melville House) of the same name. The discussion will focus on the creative use of landscape hacking, cartography, locative media, and radical urbanism as a means of engaging with the politics of contested spaces. In presenting work from the show and book, the panelists will explore the distinctions between geographical study and artistic experience of the earth, and the juncture where the two realms collide.

At a first glance, the Workshop dealing with Contribution of Geovisualization to the concept of the Digital City (Hamburg, March 3-5, 2009) may sound a bit data oriented and decision making driven:
The concept of a “Digital City” does not refer to a single, specific city. Instead we pursue a functional approach with four interdependent aspects:
- Supporting data and information,
- providing a communication infrastructure,
- delivering value added information and innovative services, and
- using virtual environments in planning, decision-making and analysis.
But this workshop might also provide a great opportunity for artists to present their visions and their representations of the Digital City, and to discuss with GIS specialists and cartographers, which might also be entertaining. The deadline for submitting 500 words abstracts is December 1st, 2008.

The first activity of this group was to organize a Symposium on Art and Cartography in Vienna, Feb 1-2, 2008. This symposium provided a great opportunity for cartographers and artists to meet and exchange. This Symposium was organised by William Cartwright (president of the ICA and initiator of the Art & Cartography working group), Georg Gartner (Vice-presicent of the ICA, co-initiator of the working group and host of the Symposium) and Antje Lehn (professor in Fine Art and co-host of the Symposium).
