Title: Art, Cartography & Experimental Practices

Session Description
The ICA Commission on Art & Cartography’s current terms of reference include a mandate to advance the field of artistic and experimental cartographies, including but not limited to such subfields as narrative cartography, cinematic cartography, sensory and phenomenological approaches to mapping, locative media, performative and performance-based cartographies, and media archaeological and other research-creation or practice-led processes. Distinct from map design, art & cartography practices are often concerned with breaking conventions of map-making to bring new modes of seeing and being into place and space. This session will present the latest in innovative research and creation from practitioners in the field.
Topics to be covered (including but not limited to):
- Subjective, embodied mapping practices
- Visual arts practices in cartography
- Media arts and geolocative sound mapping
- Intersections between cartography and the geo-humanities
Session Format: Onsite presentation
Session Structure:
- Introduction (3 minutes): Brief overview of session themes and introduction of speakers.
- Each speaker will have approximately 10-15 minutes to present their research or case study, followed by a 5-minute Q&A.
- Closing Remarks (3 minutes): Summary of key takeaways and concluding thoughts.
